This is a slight departure from our normal range of weird and bizarre effects, so here is how it came to be produced.

When performing in cabaret The Black Hart does not have full control of the performance circumstances so the act has to be adaptable for an audience who have often been drinking for some time and can be a little ‘lively’.  ‘The Black Magic Theatre Show’ therefore has a couple of effects which can be added in to cope with this situation.  If the audience need something a little lighter then this is where Supermarket Prediction comes in.  It takes up no extra space and is always ready to go, and of course it is good fun with audience participation.

Using a volunteer (usually a female) on stage or in the audience, they are shown the reverse of a prediction and are told that written on the hidden side is an exact description of the item they are about to choose.  They have the absolute free choice of any item in a large supermarket, they even get to choose the supermarket.  Suppose they choose a Sainsbury’s 10 inch deep pan, pepperoni pizza, cost £2.50 (it can be any item of course).  You reveal your prediction and it is EXACTLY CORRECT! Well, your audience will react not with stunned silence but with laughter.  Why? Because what you are showing them is a giant barcode!
