Satan’s Mistress is an easy to perform effect with two presentations. There is no sleight of hand, your volunteer handles the Tarot cards and they have a completely free choice at all times (there are NO forces). There will be a different result each time and the Tarot cards can all be examined afterwards.
Option 1 Divination:
You are doing a Tarot reading and afterwards you invite your sitter to test their powers of ESP. They take the Tarot you have been using throughout the reading and chose one and remember it, unseen by you. They place it into the Tarot card box and then into a velvet bag so no one can possibly see which Tarot was chosen. You then ask them to think of their chosen card and then are able to name it.
Option 2 Satan’s Mistress (a story telling effect)
You tell a story of a young girl who lives on a lonely wild moor. As she grows up, she is regarded as ‘strange’ by people in the local village. Eventually they accuse her of cavorting with The Devil himself and say that she is Satan’s Mistress.
She is falsely accused of murdering her father and is abducted by villagers and taken to be buried alive on the moor. She asked for one last request – to take her special cards with her. However, they said in torment that she could only choose one card. She was forced chose just one Tarot, her favourite, which she clutched as she was nailed inside a makeshift coffin which was then buried in an unmarked location.
As she was being buried, she cried out a curse against the first person to throw earth onto her coffin, she vowed to haunt them and all their generations that come after. Hesitatingly the mob decides to all throw the first earth down together. But of course, one piece of earth hit the coffin lid first, and ever since one person in every generation that followed is haunted by the soul of Satan’s Mistress.
You act out the story with your volunteer. They choose a face-down Tarot card. Unseen by you or them. They remove that Tarot from the deck. They place it in the Tarot card box to represent the coffin. They then place the box into a black velvet bag representing the grave.
You narrate the story and you then say that the Tarot chosen by the girl was (name the Tarot). Of course the only person who knows what Tarot was chosen is the ghost of the young girl, who is now looking for the next person to haunt!
The Tarot box card is taken from the bag and then the card is removed from the box and your volunteer finds that this was indeed the Tarot that the young girl also chose. This means that they are the next in line to be haunted. You commiserate with them and now move onto your next victim!
