Based on ‘Psychostasy’ by Christian Chelman in his excellent book, Capricornian Tales, ‘The Scales of Death’ takes the handling of the effect and with the help of a couple of gimmicks, makes the handling easier and fitting to the story. The presentation tells of how at the time of death a person’s soul is weighed against its bad deeds. If the soul (represented by a feather) is heavier than the bad deeds (a weight) then the soul can proceed to paradise. If the soul is lighter then they are condemned to eternal damnation. The presentation is fully scripted to match the handling.
In the script supplied, at the first attempt the weight is naturally heavier than the feather. You then perform a cleansing ceremony and now the feather is heavier than the weight and the soul can pass to paradise. It is under your control at all times. The victim can choose which side to weigh the feather on. You receive everything you need to perform this classic bizarre effect - a set of polished wood and brass scales, weights, a miniature scroll, a feather and a full script.
