Cottingley Fairies

This routine is based on the true story of ‘The Cottingley Fairies’ and cousins Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, who in 1917 supposedly photographed fairies at the bottom of their garden.

This is one of the most enduring fairy stories of the 20th century.  Indeed this very story fooled the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes stories and great proponent of spiritualism.

The cards bear the ‘names’ of the 5 fairies that the girls photographed. They later admitted that the photographs were faked, well all but the last one anyway which to her dying day Elsie insisted was real!  Your volunteer takes the cards and mixes them up and unseen by you and chooses one fairy (no force and it can be a different fairy each time).  Twice more they mix the cards face down unseen by them or you.

Now you declare the name of the real fairy and it just happens to be the one that they chose at random!  Next they spread the cards out in their hands, again face down. With your back turned you get them to drop the cards one by one until they are holding one face down card. When they turn this last card over it is the very one chosen by them - the real fairy.

There are no forces or sleights and the magic happens right in the spectators hands. Simple to do with a gentle theme that will appeal to the ladies in your audience.
